Mimosa pudica - The Shame Plant
Organisms in nature control their movement with smooth motion, often involving ion and water transport triggered by an action potential (stimulus). Plants such as the Mimosa pudica controls rapid movementthrough utilizing change in turgor pressure (water pressure).
Biomimicry
Plant mechanisms are ideal for implementing smooth movements to improve existing control interfaces. Utilizing biomimicry, we can take inspiration from their mechanisms and create better controls.
How Does It Work?
INPUT
Touching the leaves triggers the action potential that produces a mechanical stimulus
PROCESSING
Ion movement within motor cells cause water to be osmotically released into the extracellular space.
OUTPUT
The reduction of water in the cells causes them to contract, which contributes to the folding motion of the leaves.
